“READ ME” for Pink Slip FKEY, version 1.0

This document must go wherever Pink Slip FKEY goes. Please do not distribute
Pink Slip FKEY without this documentation. Please do not modify this document.
The Pink Slip FKEY is FreeWare. You don’t have to pay for it. But please send
me a note. And check out the 7.0 PLUS Utilities that I have made available
on-line.
THE PINK SLIP FKEY
==================
• If you use Pink Slip FKEY, please send me a note. My addresses
(post and e-mail) are given below in “About the Author”. Also,
read the information in the above section on registration.
• The Pink Slip FKEY lets you quit and relaunch the Finder by a
command-shift-number key sequence.
Using the Pink Slip FKey
----------------------
• Pink Slip FKEY requires System 7.0 or higher to function.
• To Install the Pink Slip FKEY, you can use one of the many FKEY
installers that are around. Or use ResEdit. To install with ResEdit,
open the Pink Slip FKEY file, cut or copy the FKEY, close the file.
Only copy the FKEY; do not copy the other resources in the file. Now
open the System file, paste the FKEY. If it asks you to replace an FKEY,
say no and check FKEY ID 8 in your System file (double-click on the
FKEY resource list to see all the FKEYs. If you want to replace it,
just paste and say Yes. Otherwise, re-id the existing FKEY to another
number between 4 and 9 by clicking on the FKEY, choosing Get Info,
and entering your number in the ID edit field. Now you can paste in the
FKEY.
• To use the FKEY, you must install it. Then just hit command-shift-8
(or whatever number the ID turns out to be if you install a special way).
That will cause the Finder to quit. You don’t have to be in the Finder
to do this. If you find that it doesn’t work, switch into the Finder and
try the sequence. There may be some problems involved with an FKEY
sending AppleEvents from the application you have open.
• If the Finder is not open, the FKEY will try to find it and launch it.
If an error occurs, Pink Slip FKEY will beep at you.
Quitting from the Finder
----------------------
• In System 7.0 and higher, the Finder is a process, just like any other open
application. Right now, TeachText (or whatever you are using now to
read this document) is probably a process. And just like any other
process, you can Quit the Finder. And, just as you will bring up the
next-to-front process when you quit this program, quitting from the
Finder will bring up the next-to-front process. If no other process is
running, the Finder will quit, and, since it can quit to nothing else, it is
re-launched by the System. This is how you update your File menu after
modification.
• Like quitting from any other program, quitting from the Finder frees
the memory it occupied.
• The main drawback of quitting from the Finder is that, since the Finder
controls the Apple menu, quitting from the Finder will cause you to
lose your Apple menu. Only the apple and the About menu item will
remain. You can get it back by reloading the Finder.
• To get the Finder running again, you must quit from all other
applications. The System opens the Finder by default when there are no
other processes to activate. Or hit the Pink Slip FKEY again. This will
launch the Finder and switch to it for you.
